# What the results actually showed

**Query:** `when should I update a page sitemap lastmod date`

**Run:** October 6, 2026, 15:51:31 UTC. Public web search tool; English query; no domain, recency, location or device filter. The tool returned a result set, not a controlled Google results-page capture. These IDs identify the selected sample, not ranking positions. No visibility, volume or market-wide coverage claim follows from it.

We selected five returned items because they could answer the rule, format, uncertainty or interpretation questions. Four useful bodies were opened; one attempt failed. Other returned items, including community discussions and broader sitemap guides, were not read for this brief.

| ID | Returned page and access | Observation | Effect on the assignment |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| R01 | [Google sitemap guidance](https://developers.google.cn/search/docs/crawling-indexing/sitemaps/build-sitemap?hl=en) appeared in results; the corresponding [official English page](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/sitemaps/build-sitemap) was opened. | A broad implementation document already contains the relevant date rule. | Cite the rule from S1; spend the example on making a decision from a change record. |
| R02 | [Protocol definition](https://www.sitemaps.org/protocol.html?view=Schedule) appeared; the [base protocol page](https://www.sitemaps.org/protocol.html) was opened. | A specification table supplies field meaning and format. | Use S2 for precision; do not expand into an XML reference chapter. |
| R03 | [Sitemap XML Structure: Tags, Attributes, and Format](https://instantsitemap.com/resources/sitemap-structure-explained) — Instant Sitemap; body opened. | A broad tag-by-tag explainer includes this short claim: “If you fix a typo, that counts too”. It also presents minor and major edits as equivalent for search engines. | Verify that generalization against Google's narrower criterion before giving it to the writer. |
| R04 | [Google's 2023 lastmod discussion](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2023/06/sitemaps-lastmod-ping) appeared and was opened. | Its lastmod section addresses uncertain dates as well as change significance. | Add an unknown-date case with a usable outcome, using S3. |
| R05 | [LaunchScaler's lastmod guide](https://www.launchscaler.com/blog/sitemap-lastmod) appeared, but opening the body returned an access error. | The result snippet showed a focused format-and-accuracy guide. Its full coverage was not inspected. | Do not claim our example covers something this page lacks; do not cite its body as read. |

## Resolve the qualification before writing

R03's blanket treatment of small edits is not the rule adopted here. Google's current guidance in S1 makes significance relevant. The assignment therefore asks the writer to inspect **what changed and what it means**, rather than apply a character-count test. A tiny correction can still change a buying decision; that is an editorial application explored in fictional case C4, not a Google-provided example.

This is a specific difference in the inspected passages. It does not justify calling every secondary result inaccurate, claiming the whole subject is disputed, or inventing an expert debate.

## What this sample cannot establish

The sample shows that rules, syntax and explanations are already available. It does not establish that no competing page includes change examples. Our planned contribution is the completed decision exercise and its evidence trail; it is not a claim of being the first or only guide to cover the topic.
